Art Sensus presents more than 100 unique photographs and a new book of the work of pioneering American photographer, Eve Arnold.

As the first woman invited to join the New York office of Magnum Photos, Eve Arnold was a pioneer in photography for her generation. Born in 1912 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Arnold began shooting pictures in 1946.

She forged close working relationships with the great Hollywood stars of her day, counting Marlene Dietrich, Somerset Maugham, Arthur Miller, Joan Crawford, Peter O’Toole, Isabella Rossellini and Orson Welles among her subjects. Most memorable are her beautifully intimate portraits of Marilyn Monroe, including many taken on the set of the actress’ final film, The Misfits.

Arnold’s oeuvre also extends to official portraits of politicians such as Margaret Thatcher, Edward Heath and John Major as well as several colour shots of Her Majesty the Queen. Meanwhile, her documentary images capture seminal moments in 20th century history, including Britain’s 1981 riots and Malcolm X’s Black Muslim movement in the 60s.

From asylum patients in Haiti to children in the ghettos of Puerto Rico to veiled Afghani widows, little escaped Arnold’s gifted eye and her work presents an all-encompassing portrait of the 20th century.

The only solo exhibition to feature Arnold’s work in the UK since her death earlier this year, All About Eve will offer a spectrum of these incredible images, all drawn from Arnold’s personal archive.

The exhibition is accompanied by a book edited by her long-time friend and gallerist, Zelda Cheatle.
