This new Science Museum exhibition reveals and applauds the often forgotten genius of seemingly mundane everyday items
This exhibition examines items that get overlooked due to their perfect assimilation into everyday life, owing to their perfectly matched design and purpose.
The likes of the ring binder, the zip, and the pencil – the most humble artefacts of every day life, will take centre stage in this exhibition that is devoted to inventions that deserve another moment in the spotlight. This is set to be a great exhibition that reflects the ways in which these vital objects continue to provide inspiration to new ideas.
Created by the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, in co-operation with Hi-Cone, the 36 inventions will be presented in accompaniment of original sketches and drawings by their inventors, along with patent specifications and original advertisements.
The Science Museum’s ‘materials science specialist’, Dr. Susan Mossman coins the success and relevance of the exhibition in this quote: “At a time when celebrity is king, it gives all of us at the Science Museum enormous satisfaction to celebrate the truly uncelebrated and shine a light on a group of outstanding inventions and inventors, revealing the supposedly mundane to be nothing short of remarkable.”
