Hats have historically been a staple of women's fashion, from the extravagant bonnets of the 18th century to the cloche hats of the 1920s. This versatile accessory has adapted with the times and varied in shape, size, colour and adornments. In the 1920s feathers exploded onto the hat scene with the birth of the flapper era. The 1940s and World War II brought khaki and olive green, as well as patriotic reds and blues to the forefront of hat design.
Due to rationing wartime fashion became more utilitarian, yet the hat continued to play an important role in women's fashion. Women might have been wearing last year's dress, but if their hat was on-trend they were always up-to-date. To this day hats can be worn as a symbol of style status.
