Vintage Seekers says
Oscar Hammerstein's Broadway musical Carmen Jones is a contemporary re-telling of the Bizet opera with an entirely African-American cast, starring Dorothy Dandridge as Carmen and Harry Belafonte as her lover Joe.
Though this rare poster was produced specifically for the Cannes Film Festival, Carmen Jones was in fact banned from the 1954 festival due to it being regarded as offensive to Bizet's original opera. However, the film was given a special showing the following year, with leading star Dandridge even been given a formal invitation by the French government. Carmen Jones marks the festival's first nod to films featuring a largely black cast.
This is an extremely rare poster as it is the only one to have surfaced in the past 20 years.
