Curating a Heritage Lifestyle
This is an original release British film poster for the Hitchcock classic 'The Wrong Man' (1957).
The film, produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock is based on a true story of mistaken identity. The musician Manny Balestrero (Henry Fonda) is mistaken for an insurance office robber and goes on trial. Several unfortunate coincidences occur and everyone is convinced he is guilty. His wife Rose (Vera Miles) finds it really difficult to handle this and has to be admitted to a mental hospital.
The poster size is called a 'British Quad', and is still today the standard size for British posters. The rariety of this poster is based on the fact that only a limited print-run were produced, just enough to be sent to cinemas across the United Kingdom in 1957. The film's stars, Vera Miles and Henry Fonda, and even more so the film's director, Alfred Hitchcock, make the poster more collectable.
In the forty or so years since, more of the print-run will have been destroyed than collected, giving this poster rariety and its subsequent present-day value.
The poster was designed by famed American poster designer Bill Gold. It centres on Henry Fonda, casting him in a spotlight to make you, the spectator, realise that Henry Fonda is the wrong man.
As with all posters from this period, the piece was originally folded, but has since been conservation linen-backed, a process which flattens out the folds and removes acid from the paper, thus preserving it over time.
