Curating a Heritage Lifestyle
Fantastic vintage 1960s haute couture dress by Dior, designed by Marc Bohan, 1962. The dramatic slit neckline and cap sleeves in the final dress in our display show the masterful balance Bohan managed to strike between tradition and modernity.
Christian Dior has always defined the criteria of feminine elegance across the world.
He was born in 1905 in Normandy, France and began to sell fashion illustrations to Paris fashion houses from 1929. Five years later the company Christian Dior moved into a beautiful town house located at 30 avenue Montaigne in Paris, which still remains home to the fashion brand today. A true icon of the 20th century Christian Dior has delivered unbelievable, innovative, classic and magnificent pieces for over three quarters of a century. Defined by sophistication and cutting edge design the fashion house has a distinct signature style and is one of the world's most popular labels.
When Marc Bohan took the helm at Dior in late 1960, he picked up on the modernist heritage of the label, channelling Dior's original recipe for style with the exaggerated hourglass silhouette, yet disarticulated this so as to incorporate what the public wanted. Bohan also reacted to the work of his contemporaries, particularly Balenciaga, Mary Quant and André Courrèges.
