Hubert de Givenchy was the first major designer to launch a ready-to-wear line in the 1950s. Having apprenticed under Jacques Fath, Lucien Lelong and Elsa Schiaparelli, and mentored by Cristobal Balenciaga, Givenchy had strong fashion credentials and a wealth of experience before starting his own label. He dressed famous women of the day in his typical simplistic but elegant style including Lauren Bacall, Greta Garbo, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlene Dietrich, Jaqueline Kennedy, Princess Grace of Monaco and the Duchess of Windsor.
