1960s Tapio Wirkkala Set of 4 Whisky and 6 Long Glasses

Set of four original vintage 1960s old stock Ultima Thule whisky glasses and six long drink glasses by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala in original box.

This series is designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Ittala in 1968, the Ultima Thule glassware is a modern classic. These old editions have the wonderful thick glass and are a great hold.

Long drink glasses are 12.5cm height x 8cm diameter, whisky glasses are 9cm height x 9.5cm diameter.

When this design was unveiled in the 1960s, it represented something new in the glass industry and contributed to Iittala's international breakthrough. Thousands of hours were spent to perfect the glass-blowing technique that's required for the Ultima Thule collection, the unique pattern is created when the molten glass burns into the surface of the wooden molds.

In medieval geographies, 'Ultima Thule' was the name used for a far away place that was beyond the borders of the known world. This distinctive classic from the 1960s contributed to Iittala's international breakthrough.
