The reputation of Rolex precedes itself, being the largest single luxury watch brand in the world. Owning one of their watches is nowadays seen as something of a status symbol, even though the evolution of their design and functionality over the years is what has truly earned the brand its reputation. Rolex originated in 1905; notable dates since then include the first self-winding Rolex watch going on sale in 1931, and the creation of a specialist deep-sea diving watch (the Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller) in 1971. Ian Fleming's James Bond famously wore a Rolex Oyster Perpetual throughout the series of spy novels.
In 1931, Rolex introduced a perpetual rotor that rewound the watch with every flick of the wearer's wrist. The world's first successful automatic watch became the bedrock of the Rolex empire. And no wonder it was the watch of choice for Bond - having summitted Mount Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary and travelled to the depths of the ocean with Jacques Piccard, the Oyster Perpetual has been proved time and time again under the most strenuous conditions.
