Curating a Heritage Lifestyle
1980 Dow's Port is a firm, fragrant vintage.
Dow's was one of the first port companies to own their own vineyards in the Douro. They acquired the Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira, deep in the Douro Superior, in 1890 and the Quinta do Bomfim near Pinhão in the Cima Corgo in 1896.
For over a century these two quintas have defined the distinctive Dow's style: distinctly drier than many other vintage ports, intense and aromatic with peppery tannins, austere in youth but ageing magnificently and elegantly.
The 1980 vintage is notable for its deep and rich ruby colour. On the nose, there are complex aromas of red fruit and a touch of pepper and chocolate. Full bodied and still fresh, with good round tannins and the long and slightly dry finish that is characteristic of Dow's Vintage Port.
Wine Spectator's James Suckling said of this wine, "A forgotten wine that has always been outstanding. Firm and tight, with raspberry and all-spice character. Full-bodied and sweet, with a long, long finish." Score: 91/100
