German fashion designer, artist and photographer Karl Lagerfeld's significant career in the fashion industry began when he placed second in an International Wool Secretariat competition to design a coat, pipped to the post by Yves Saint Laurent. Lagerfeld was then awarded an apprenticeship with Pierre Balmain, and later designed haute couture for Jean Patou. In the 1960s he became a freelance designer, working for fashion houses including Tiziani, Chloé and Fendi. In 1983, Lagerfeld became the head designer and creative director for Chanel, his most notable and influential partnership.
