First introduced to the public in 1954 at the Swiss Watch Fair, the Rolex Submariner was born when RWC director and amateur diving enthusiast, Rene P Jeanneret encouraged Rolex to manufacture a watch suitable for diving whilst still retaining the elegance of a gentleman's dress watch. Known for its extreme water resistance, and introducing innovations such as the rotating bezel used to gauge airtime when underwater, the flip lock clasp, and extension link to be used on a wetsuit, the Submariner set the benchmark for all future commercial sports watches.

Identical to its better known brother, the Rolex Submariner 16610, the 14060M differs only by the absence of the date complication, which gives it a more simple and classic looking face.
