After beginning his career as a fashion illustrator, Raymond Loewy rose rapidly to become a highly influential and respected interior designer. He worked as a consultant for over 200 companies and designed products as wide ranging as cigarette packets and cars, from company logos to Coca Cola bottles to spacecraft.
Loewy founded three design companies in New York, London and Paris - his influence was so wide-ranging he was able to safely claim in 1951 "the average person, leading a normal life, whether in the country, a village, a city, or a metropolis, is bound to be in daily contact with some of the things, services, or structures in which R.L.A [Raymond Loewy Associates] was a party during the design or planning stage."
