Curating a Heritage Lifestyle
Ringo Or Robin Backgammon Set - 1974 UK Backgammon set designed as a promotional item by RoR. This exquisite set contains a 24" x 21" orange/black mirrored glass playing board with aluminum frame surround, complete with tumblers, dice playing counters. Very few of these boards were manufactured & rarely surface onto the collectors market.
RoR (Ringo or Robin) was a design company created by Ringo Starr and his business partner Robin Cruickshank. Formed in the early 1970's RoR was responsible for creating a variety of items, including official Apple merchandise, along with various other boutique goods ranging from novelty executive toys and desk ornaments to fully functional furniture and decorative mirrors. The venture was not a great success and their partnership ended in 1976. Now, almost 30 years on, their designs are very rare, especially the many items manufactured from glass, which by their very nature were delicate and easily chipped or broken.
The Playing Board
The board measures approximately 24" x 21" and framed in brushed aluminum. The boards surface is mirrored glass with the playing area printed in orange and black with a green centre divider. In the very centre of the board is the "© RoR LTD 74" text in green.
The board shows evidence of light use but remains in fantastic condition.
The Accessories
30 wooden playing counters, 15 coated in heavy black lacquer, 15 coated in an orange lacquer. All exhibit signs of light usage but NO damage or excessive fading, beautifully manufactured.
4 original regular dice, 1 special backgammon dice, made from lacquered wood. These accessories are housed in a hinged lid, black cardboard box with seperate compartments for each of the dice and the two different coloured counters.
Also included are 2 silver coloured plastic tumblers stylishly finished in silver - both show signs of use with some light scratches to the finish, however nothing to spoil the overall beauty of the piece.
All the above accessories are original components from 1974 - nothing is missing, nor has anything been replaced.
As previously mentioned these sets rarely surface onto the collectors market, however when they do they are usually in a far worse condition than this one AND they generally have a board which is framed in wood, instead of aluminum! To our knowledge this is the only aluminum framed one to ever become available for sale to the public and is unlikely to hang around for long!
