Curating a Heritage Lifestyle
David Hockney is a pivotal member of the British Pop Art scene often referred to as one of the most influential artists in Britain. We have a limited edition print of 'Rapunzel Growing in the Garden', from 'Illustrations for Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm'.
The print is an etching with aquatint, 1969, on wove paper. The etching is an excellent example of Hockney's intricate and precise markmaking skills that can be seen in the garden. Signed "David Hockney" and numbered "59/100" in pencil. Proofed by Maurice Payne, printed by the Print Shop Amsterdam, published by Petersburg Press. Print measures 615x446mm and has been professionally framed.
A brilliant draughtsman and an outstanding graphic artist, David Hockney always loved Grimm's Fairy Tales and had read all of them. He also admired earlier illustrations to them by Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. Illustrating the tales was one of his most ambitious printmaking projects and enabled the artist to give full reign to his imagination. He illustrated only six titles: 'The Little Sea Hare', 'Fundevogel', 'Rapunzel', 'The Boy who left Home to learn Fear', 'Old Rink Rank', and 'Rumpelstiltzhen'. In all he made over 80 etchings from which 39 were published by Petersburg Press in both book and loose-leaf portfolio editions.
