Description

1940s Dolomites, Italy travel poster in colours printed in 1949 by Castelfrance, Veneto promoting the town of Auronzo in the Italian Dolomites. A charmingly composed mountain image offered in pristine condition on preservation linen-backing. Scarce.

In A- condition - there may be some slight dirt, fold, tears or bubble or other minor restoration, but most unobtrusive, or the poster was folded but is otherwise flawless.

Railways and cruise liners were the first to commission graphic artists to create these posters (air travel gradually took around the middle of the century) at a time when lithographic stone printing and the Art Deco aesthetic were flourishing. The result is scores of beautifully glossy, crafted posters that combine bold text with stylised, geometric images.

"40 years before this poster was printed, national dress was still national dress. Tourists stared and took photos, but not many. I wonder how many visitors to the Dolomites met a little girl dressed like this? Today we wear not our national dress but the international dress of Levi's jeans, Gap T-shirts and Nike shoes. What an opportunity there is for locations to differentiate - and sell - themselves by reinventing local costume."
