Curating a Heritage Lifestyle
Much sought after and truly iconic in image, this infamous lithographic poster by Pablo Picasso can bring the Cote D'Azur to life on any wall.
Perhaps the most famous artist of the 20th century, Picasso was at the helm of a score of influential modern art movements: he played with non-Western forms of representation through Primitivism, overturned traditional pictorial space with Cubism then plunged into the world of mythology and Freudian psychology on the fringes of Surrealism. However he always remained a distinctly independent artist, dabbling with the avant garde developments of his time yet never completely committing or submerging his artistic identity into one camp as many artists did. Whether he's depicting Catalan beggars and clowns, the azure backdrop of southern France where he spent much of his time, or one of his many muses and lovers, Picasso's art is eminently distinctive, witty and highly collectible.
This lithograph was designed by Picasso in collaboration with Henri Deschamps and is based on the original painting, Pigeons at 'La Californie', from 1957. It was printed by the famous Henri Mourlot in Paris in 1962, using stone, 14 colour lithography in an edition of 15,000. The poster is signed within the lithograph and was published by the Ministère des Travaux Public et des Transports, Paris as an exclusive travel advertisement for the Cote D'Azur to tempt travels in the 1960s. And that it did.
