If walls could talk this is one building you would want to hear tell its tales. After all, Greta Garbo, Noel Coward, Aristotle Onassis, Princess Grace and Prince Rainier, Igor Stravinsky and Pablo Picasso were among the regular visitors to Coco Chanel's holiday villa.

The French fashion designer commissioned this seven-bedroom, seven-bathroom house in 1929 on a plot of land near Monaco that had been gifted by her lover, the Duke of Westminster.

With glorious views over Menton and magnificent gardens planted with lavender, rosemary and olive trees, it served as the perfect summertime retreat for the couple until 1953. It was then sold to literary agent and art collector Emery Reves, who rented the house to Winston Churchill when the politician was looking for a quiet place to complete his memoirs.

Despite being in need of some renovation, the asking price is in the region of €40 million due to the starry provenance of the property.
